Kevin is a 39-year-old lorry driver delivering catering supplies in central London. He’s been driving professionally for 14 years and is confident navigating city traffic. On a Thursday morning, while following his usual route, Kevin misreads a diversion sign and ends up on a road with a low bridge. His vehicle, which is 14’6″, strikes the bridge that has a clearance of 14’3″. The top of the vehicle is damaged, but no one is injured.
Kevin immediately stops the vehicle and activates his hazard lights. He contacts his transport office to report the incident and calls the emergency services. While waiting, he avoids moving the vehicle and warns pedestrians to stay back. Once the emergency services arrive and the road is deemed safe, the vehicle is recovered. Later, his company conducts a review of the route planning process, and Kevin is required to undergo a refresher course on bridge strike prevention.
